Camphill volunteers, or coworkers, come in as many varieties as there are
countries in the world or stages of life.
Many young people apply from Europe for volunteer positions at Camphill Communities California. They join us to gain breadth of experience in a foreign country and enrich their learning and understanding of other cultures and people with differing abilities. This time spent in Camphill can provide helpful experience for those considering future professions such as social work, nursing or special education.
Others come to Camphill California from either this country or abroad at other stages of life - after having worked in the commercial world for some years they now experience a heartfelt yearning to put their abilities to a different use and contribute to a worthwhile and joyful community building effort. They are drawn by the qualities of reverence for the human spirit, community camaraderie, simple rhythms of life and respect for the environment which can be found here. They also want their children to be brought up with these basic values. Not surprisingly, many stay for years beyond their original commitment.

Coworkers live in community with residents with developmental disabilities and
participate in all aspects of daily life. Each coworker is mentored by a more
experienced community member and receives ongoing guidance. They participate in our three programs: domestic arts, landscaping and fabric arts. They also are responsible for the direct care of those who need assistance and in the upkeep of the households. It is an invigorating and challenging life. Flexibility, openness and emotional well being are essential qualities for a successful stay here.
In addition, coworkers take part in many outings to the beautiful Santa Cruz coastal attractions and the redwood forests nearby. They participate in the rich diversity of cultural and social events offered in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the many joyful seasonal festivals celebrated at Camphill. Weekly days off and vacation time are also woven into coworker schedules. Life is full and rewarding.

Coworkers do not receive a salary, but their room and board are covered and in addition they receive a small monthly stipend. Medical insurance is also offered for those who make a long term commitment.
We are looking for people with some experience of the English language who can volunteer for a minimum of one year, and preferably 18 months. In the future we may be able to take shorter term commitments. At this time we would prefer people who are at least 21 years old and have possibly had a year or two of work experience before applying.
After initial contact with us and familiarity with our literature, the application process involves a written application with references and then a visit and an interview at Camphill California, or interview by telephone if the applicant lives abroad.
